World Music Day

Whether you’re someone that likes to sing in the shower or hum along to your favourite tunes while driving, music in some shape or form is a part of all our lives. Music is everywhere and has proven to have a positive impact in our lives.

World Music Day is celebrated on June 21 around the globe. Originating in Paris, France, it is now celebrated in over a hundred countries around the globe. It is a day to recognize the benefits that music has in our daily lives promoting harmony and unity. Communities are encouraged to embrace music and share it with others. Music has the power to bring individuals and communities together, transcending barriers such as gender, race, age, culture, or language.

Not only is it a creative outlet but some of the physical and mental health benefits include:

  • Reduces stress levels: music can promote relaxation and reduce the production of stress hormones such as cortisol.
  • mood “booster”: if music reduces stress, naturally it can improve the mood and foster feelings of happiness and positivity.
  • Enhances your performance of exercise, which is why most people listen to music while they exercise.
  • Studies have shown to improve cognitive health including memory.
  • Promotes better sleep.
  • Improves emotional well-being and self-expression.

Ways to celebrate or get involved in World Music Day:

  • Attend local concerts or events being organised in your community (most are free today!)
  • Organise your own music gathering with family and friends (karaoke is a fun way that brings you all together with music!)
  • Musical “food tasting” where you can taste new foods and listen to music from another country, further enhancing the connection between food and music.
  • Make a World Music Day playlist: Explore the diversity of music, new music genres, songs in different languages.
  • Start a new instrument.
  • Read about a musician or musical genre that you don’t know about

So don’t be shy, immerse yourself in the magic of music today and always!
