International Friendship Day

International Friendship Day was initially declared by the United Nations as a way to promote the idea of social harmony amongst different nations. It describes friendship (in the geographical context) as a means of fostering bonds of trust, understanding and respect (United Nations, 2011.) But what does this day mean to each one of us in our everyday lives?

I believe the saying “Friends are the family we choose for ourselves” reflects on the significance and importance that friends can play in our lives. Our friendships may certainly evolve over time but one could argue that friendships are the one ‘constant’ seen across the different seasons of our life.

Friends can provide us with a sense of belonging and community notes Miles (2022).  Friendships have the ability to challenge us and motivate us. They can help expand our awareness and shift perspectives. Miles (2022) also highlights the fact that these friendship bonds can serve as an emotional support base when we’re navigating difficult times.

So how can we celebrate our friends as we look ahead to International Friendship Day, 2024?

Gifts and messages – We could choose to share our appreciation for our friends by calling them, sending voice messages or texts to express our gratitude. We could also consider gifting items that may represent something sentimental or meaningful to them.

Social activities and outings – The options are almost endless! You could opt to book a meal at your favourite restaurant or plan an exciting adventure day out. Watching a movie at the cinema or preparing a picnic pack to share with friends are some ideas to consider.

Quality time – If a busy activity is not high up on your ideas list, the thought of just being in the presence of your friends on a night in at home can also be an option. Cooking a meal at home, creating artwork together or sharing a warm cup of tea or coffee are other meaningful ways to connect.

Reconnecting with old friends – In the spirit of International Friendship Day, this could also be an opportunity to reflect on some connections and friendships that you’ve lost touch with. A simple text could be a thoughtful way to reach out to old friends to let them know you are thinking of them.

However you may decide to celebrate International Friendship Day, it’s important that we don’t lose sight of the essence of this day and that is to reflect upon and appreciate the power of friendship. Let’s honour these amazing friends of ours that walk alongside us to celebrate our milestones and overcome our hurdles.
